Jumpstone's author, Carol Fullerton-Samsel

Welcome to Jumpstone

Hello. My name is Carol Fullerton-Samsel. I am the author of "The Clones of Langston," an award-winning science fiction novel. I've also published "An Artist's Path: Two Years Toward Professionalism," which details my successes and failures as I struggled to establish myself as a professional artist (now retired). I'm interested in many things, so this blog has articles on many different topics. I hope that you find the entries informative or interesting. Thank you for stopping by, and please feel free to e-mail me at jumpstone@sbcglobal.net.

  • Photographs of townships surrounding Cape Town May 12, 2013
In Langa Township, a  well-shaded park stands between this memorial and a small elementary school. The mosaic stands in memory of children shot in the park during a peaceful protest in 1976. Another mosaic, pictured below, illustrates the barracks used to house migrant laborers. According to information printed on the marker, “The main barracks consisted … C […]

  • Views from the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town May 6, 2013
A cable car takes visitors to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Our tour guide, Jeremy Poole, told us that a day as clear as this occurs perhaps five days a year. More often than not, there is is heavy cloud cover over the mountain. We arrived just as the park … Continue reading →

  • Books to read in preparation for a trip to South Africa May 1, 2013
I read a lot of material about South Africa in preparation for my trip. Understanding the things I saw about me made the journey that much more interesting. For anyone traveling to South Africa, I’d recommend reading the following books in the order presented: South Africa: History in an Hour by Anthony Holmes 2012 The … Continue reading →

  • Photographs from downtown Cape Town, South Africa May 1, 2013
We’ve just returned from a Smartours vacation to South Africa and Victoria Falls (in neighboring Zimbabwe). This is the first installment of photographs from that journey. Above is the view from our room at the Protea Hotel President. This is the old City Hall in Cape Town. It was built in the 1860′s and used … Continue reading →

  • Crystal Castles – an 11th grade poem February 1, 2013
This poem was inspired by courtyard walls edging Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The walls were topped by cemented-in broken bottles. CRYSTAL CASTLES by Carol Fullerton-Samsel The broken bottles on the wall Serve as the courtyard’s capitol. With jagged spires and splintered sides The crystal palaces divide The streets below, at which they stare, From … Contin […]

  • The Zebra Hack – a poem from 11th grade February 1, 2013
Another childhood writing inspired by a visit to New Orleans. THE ZEBRA HACK by Carol Fullerton-Samsel The carriage nag with chiseled frame Wears leather halters that inflame Its sculptured ribs and bony spine; Thus to its lowly task confined, The spindly mare with muscles tense Hauls tourists with indifference Along the roads that are routine … Continue rea […]

  • Friends – A short story written in 2005 February 1, 2013
FRIENDS When Minka accepted my invitation, I was really excited. I was tired of looking out the dorm window and watching others walk by with friends. I was tired of seeing girls group and hearing them giggle, and knowing I was not one of them. Then Minka came to our little college, and I thought … Continue reading →

  • White Delivery – A story written in the 10th grade February 1, 2013
White Delivery by Carol Fullerton-Samsel Clap clop. Clap clop. Thack! One of the caravan wagons struck a ridged scar in the face of the highway. An infinite line of automobiles passed the band with motorized grumbles and roars; honks and beeps.  Despite these annoyances, not one horse flinched beneath its traces. They’d been passed by … Continue reading → […]

  • Spell Check Anywhere — useful and inexpensive January 24, 2013
While I was trying to get spell check to work in Microsoft Office 2010, I discovered a great spell-check program called Spell Check Anywhere. I like this program, because it can be used to check anything that appears on one’s computer screen. A small green button appears in the upper right-hand corner of all programs. … Continue reading →
